Drill 123
Rondo + “Burst Move” (15 mins)
Setup:
grid (10x10m)
2 defenders in the middle, rest on outside
1 ball
How it works:
Outside players keep possession using one or two touches.
As soon as a player passes, they must immediately “burst” into a new space around the edge (not just shuffle sideways), before their foot lands.
Next receiver fills the empty spot, creating a constant flow.
Coaching Points:
Focus on receiving with the back foot, head up.
Pass and move with urgency—don’t watch your pass!
“Burst” movement—push off the standing foot as the pass is played.
Call out “NAME!” every time you pass.
Progression:
Add a second ball for more challenge.
Limit to one-touch passes if appropriate.
If 4th player in group, blues take turns at defending
Team 1:
Player 1 must pass ball to player 2, player 2 then must attempt to pass ball back to player 1
Defender:
Defender can go once the ball passes center line.
Defenders job is to cut out the second pass.
Allow defender to fail a few times
Notes:
Defender will press diagonally and fail multiple times using the instinctive press.
Instinctive press
Coaching Point/Defensive Principal:
After a few failures, what can we do better?
Introduce “GET IN LINE” defending
Defender now gets success.
If still no success, can we get in line quicker using a sharper angle
Switch teams every 7-10 tries.
Get In Line
Get In Line 2
Defensive Principals 1.1 – (Get In Line)
Notes:
Each time defender wins ball or the ball passes halfway switch to opposite end with the other team starting with possession
Yellow team:
Objective is for inside player to receive the ball and dribble passed half way line or pass to opposite end, can bounce ball back to starting player as many times as needed.
Coaching Point:
Can we get tight – arm out touching the player at all times
Always be behind the player so that you can see both players and the ball
Blue team:
Stop the yellow player reaching half way.
HOW?
- Get tight to the player and don’t allow a turn
- Make sure you can see both players and the ball at all times
